Sushi is considered a top cuisine, and is enjoyed by people all over the world at the best sushi restaurants. However, for some the idea of eating raw fish and rice is completely foreign. Looking down at the sushi seafood menu can be intimidating, so here are a few things that first time sushi eaters should look for.

Know What You Like

Narrowing down your selection is as easy as thinking about what kind of food you like to eat. Most sushi restaurants list the ingredients in their sushi rolls, making it easy to find the kind of food you’re looking to eat.

Try Cooked Sushi

If the sight of fresh seafood, it may be easier to try a roll that is cooked. If you’re looking to avoid slimy, raw fish, opt for rolls with eel, crabmeat, or shrimp. More often then not, these ingredients will be cooked. Many sushi restaurants also offer rolls with other cooked meat, such as chicken or beef.

Or Try Vegetables

If seafood just isn’t your thing, there are plenty of rolls that have no fish in them at all. Vegetarian rolls feature vegetables such as cucumber, sweet potato, and avocado, and make for delicious meals. And if you’re worried about the fishy taste of seaweed, ask if you can have it replaced with rice paper.

Ask the Chef

If you’re still having a hard time finding something that seems appetizing, go up to the sushi bar and ask the chef for recommendations. Sushi chefs are experts on the different tastes and textures of their rolls, and will most likely be able to create something you will enjoy. Ask about the different types of fresh seafood that are offered, and see if there is a type that you’re willing to try. Or, inform the chef of the things you like and don’t like, and have them come up with something you’re sure to love.
